Over centuries, all of most important and honorable guests of Polish lands solemnly entered to Cracow, from side of modern square Matejko, under arch of Florianska Brama, majestically paraded through the streets Grodzka and Kanonicza to very Wawel. This path was for coronations and burials, of most famous Polish monarchs. Since it was the only way by which kings passed through the city, he was named Royal road.
King's Road starts from Matejko Square, which used to be center of town Kleparz later attached to Krakow. Passing Academy of Fine Arts, and Florian's church in street Bashtova, we approach impressive Barbican - truly a treasure of European military architecture. Barbican fortress was built in 1499, after battle King Jan Olbarht with Turkish troops.
Not far from famous Barbican rises Brama Florianska. These gates were witnesses many outstanding events in history of Poland.
Just behind Florentine Brahma to our gaze opens view of the most representational street in Cracow, at the end of which stands St. Mary's Church. This is Florianska street, surrounded by stone houses, walls of which remember Middle Ages, in today's day is one of liveliest shopping streets in Cracow. Continuing our way past old churches, chapels and homes, we get closer to Wawel Castle. Wawel Royal Residence consists of three main wings surrounding a delightful courtyard, in which were remarkable official receptions and jousting tournaments. In the parterre was a royal arsenal and treasury.
